The following are links to organizations who provide information for people to get involved in fitness, weight loss, and the awareness and advocacy of bettering the health of our society:
Those who struggle with weight issues sometimes also struggle with Type 2 Diabetes due to obesity. The ADA’s Tour de Cure is a series of fundraising cycling events held in 43 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Last year, more than 40,000 cyclists in 80 Tour events raised nearly $17 million to support the mission of the ADA: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
The ADA helps the public and its member get involved through designated healthy eating awareness month/dates; social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In; blogs from experts, students, and professionals; public surveys; and forums.
The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA provides links and ideas for citizens to get involved to help reduce the burden of diet- and inactivity-related heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.
The American Heart Association hosts the Start! HeartWalk as a fundraising event and as an awareness campaign to promote walking as a heart healthy exercise to increase longevity and how daily exercise (including walking) reduces the risk of heart diesease.
The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together the world’s top researchers, clinical nutritionists and industry to advance our knowledge and application of nutrition for the sake of humans and animals. Our focus ranges from the most critical details of research and application to the broadest applications in society, in the United States and around the world.
